The year goes by so quickly and the holidays are upon us. As we get ready for 2013, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on some of the events that took place in our neighborhood this year and to wish everyone a most wonderful Christmas and a safe, peaceful Happy New Year!
In the upcoming year of 2013, we have plans to repeat the events that have previously been successful for us and add some new projects as well. If there is a project that you would like to see Edgemoor undertake or an improvement made to our neighborhood, e-mail me or any Board Member through our website links and submit your ideas. We would love to hear from you. As we close out the year 2012, I would personally like to invite you to join us at our monthly meetings and to be a part of your community.
2012 was another great year in the neighborhood. We started our activities this year with our annual cookout at Puryear Park in April. We battled an ever changing weather front up to the day of the cookout, but the odds worked in our favor and we pulled it off before the rains moved in. The unpredictable forecast resulted in a smaller crowd than usual, although those who came had a great time. In July, a group of members from ENA had a great time at the Trop watching our Rays play from the comforts of a capacity filled Suite. There’s nothing like watching our team, while drinking a cold beverage, in the comforts of an air conditioned stadium, to beat the summer heat in Florida.
October brought around our annual Neighborhood Clean-up. The City graciously provided multiple roll off dumpster’s that we placed in strategic places throughout the neighborhood. Once again, Edgemoor residents pitched in and filled them to overflowing capacity. There are a lot of cleaner garages in the neighborhood because of this event. While we were not busy with these items, we managed to sneak in a few other less noticed improvements in the Neighborhood as well.
The President and Board of Directors were busy working with the City Officials to have a number of improvements made to Edgemoor. The children’s playground at Puryear Park is now fenced completely and has new sidewalks leading to the entry gate. This is a much safer play area for our smaller residents and visitors. Updated equipment and play surfaces are in the future plans for the playground. We now have 2 park benches installed in a shaded area in our Triangle Park. This provides a nice place for residents to stop and cool down during walks around our neighborhood. It also gives our canine lovers a place to take a break when taking that afternoon walk. There is a refuse container onsite to deposit trash and the “necessary bags” that end up taking the long walk home with the pet owners.
Edgemoor/Puryear Park now has a completed Kayak Launch and mini parking area for our friends and neighbors to access the 54th Ave Canal and Estuary. This area is now part of the City Blueways Trail system. For those who enjoy a natural setting, our Canal and Estuary offers many opportunities to see nesting Eagles, Roseate Spoonbills, other native wildlife and a variety of Marine life unique to Florida. This Estuary system will be studied by the students attending Canterbury School’s new Cousteau Marine Science Center, established last year by Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of the late Jacques Cousteau, making it the first Cousteau Divers partner school in the world.
The students involved in this program will be studying Marine life and water quality issues in our Canal and Estuary. They will help maintain the overall quality of this unique body of water. Edgemoor Neighborhood Association hopes to partner with the school program this upcoming year as part of our Canal Clean Up project. Check back for more information on this project. The latest addition you may have noticed is the new landscaping planted around our recently installed signs. This upgrade to our entryways was provided by the City, courtesy of the Mayor’s office in their continuing efforts to support Edgemoor and other neighborhoods in our City.
Edgemoor Neighborhood Association’s Board of Directors works hand in hand with the City staff to maintain our neighborhood infrastructure and make improvements within our boundaries. We have a number of dedicated members who have helped direct the path we have taken over the last few years. We would like to have even more members to help us make our choices going forward.
In our ongoing efforts to keep everyone better informed, we hope to settle on an electronic method that will best suite everyone. Currently we send general emails from time to time with meeting reminders and event announcements, if you would like to be included on this list please let me know, firstname.lastname@example.org. Our website also has a WordPress Blog, that with a simple registration – which only requires your creating a user name and password – the Blog will notify you of new posts. We hope that you will join your neighbors at our upcoming meetings and events, we always have fun, no matter what the weather! Stay informed and be involved, join ENA!
I am looking forward to another great year here in Edgemoor in 2013.
Happy Holidays to all,
